Welcome to the 2023 Vale of Evesham Asparagus season which runs from St George’s Day, also National Asparagus Day on the 23rd April to 21st June. Here you will find more information about the events that are taking place in the area to celebrate the ‘Vale Gras’ as it is locally known. This precious vegetable is exclusive to this area having being granted protected food name status which specifically links it to a particular geographical area and indicates a certain level of quality. Asparagus grown in the Vale of Evesham is the only place to try this delicacy whether you decide to purchase it from one of the many local farm shops or visit one of the cafes and restaurants in the area that will be serving it. Grown in the Vale is an online exhibition exploring the heritage of Worcestershire’s market gardening – tales of life on the land, helping hands and the industry’s national reach. Discover how market gardening shaped the landscape and communities in the Vale of Evesham for over 100 years, hear local memories and unearth forgotten stories of wartime medicine, jam factories and much more.
Created as part of the Market Gardening Heritage project (2018-21) by Worcestershire Archive & Archaeology Service and partners, with funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
From 7pm the famous Asparagus Auction begins. Hundreds gather in the courtyard of the Fleece Inn to bid for the seasons largest, freshest and greenest Asparagus. All the produce is donated by local growers and Auctioned off by local man Colin Jelfs. In past years thousands of pounds have been raised for the Bretforton Silver band instruments and this event has been on Terry and Mason's Great Food Trip, Countryfile with Adam Henson, Escape to The Country and local and national news!
